Sioux City & St Paul / West Wisconsin 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 61/C-9 (Locobase 9305)

Data from CStPM&O 4 - 1900 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 751-752 in August 1880.

Two years after Taunton supplied the Omaha Road with some mixed-traffic 4-4-0s (Locobase 9303), the small Massachusetts builder added this pair of freighters with slightly larger fireboxes and a little more boiler area. At almost the same time as their arrival, the two locomotives were rebranded for the Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha. A year later, the Omaha Route placed them in their own C-9 class and added 200 to their numbers.

261 was sold to the Laona & Northern in 1901. In the same year, O'Neal Brothers of Stillwater, Minn bought the 262.

Class C H Bigelow/C-7 (Locobase 9303)

Data from CStPM&O 4 - 1900 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 690-691 in September 1978.

Small, lightweight Eight-wheelers from a small Massachusetts builder. The second engine was named for R Blakly. Both were renumbered by the Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha in 1880.

Both were sold in 1903. The 216 went to the Pan American Railway while Reddis Lumber & Vencer Company (Marshfield, Wisc).

Class C-3 (Locobase 9301)

Data from CStPM&O 4 - 1900 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 6, pages 149 and 228. Works numbers were 3142-3143, 3162, and 3166 in March 1873.

At the same time Baldwin delivered 63"" mixed-traffic Eight-wheelers (Locobase 9300) locomotives to the WW, the builder supplied this quartet of freight engines that duplicated the order except for the smaller drivers.

Class C-4 (Locobase 9302)

Data from CStPM&O 4 - 1900 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 6, pages 149 and 228. Works numbers were 3142-3143, 3162, and 3166 in March 1873.

At the same time Baldwin delivered 63" mixed-traffic Eight-wheelers (Locobase 9301) locomotives to the WW, the builder supplied this quartet of freight engines that duplicated the order except for the smaller drivers.

Class George A Hamilton/A-2 (Locobase 9293)

Data from CStPM&O 4 - 1900 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 568, 578 in 1872.

229 was a petite Eight-wheeler that came from a small, but well-regarded Massachusetts builder. Taunton delivered several other 4-4-0s in the same period, but most were converted in 1890 to B-3 0-4-0s driven by 15" x 24" cylinders. 228 (works 568) served in class A-2, but Al Weber's engine-by-engine listing shows this locomotive with 15" diameter cylinders.

After its appearance in the Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha diagram book in 1900, 229 was sold to E H Hobe Lumber Company.
