Des Moines, Iowa Falls & Northern 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 12625)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 25, p. . Works numbers were 20977 and 20979 in September 1902.

Locobase 11410 sketches the corporate history of the DM, IF & N. The 101 and 102 were relettered for the Saint Paul & Des Moines in 1908. When the SP & DM was sold to the Saint Paul & Kansas City Short Line Railroad in August 1911 the engines were renumbered 52-53.

As noted in Locobase 11410, the SP & KCSL remained independent until 1948. But their locomotives were renumbered 598-599 for the Rock Island in 1913 and designated E-18. 599 was scrapped in April 1927 with 52 following in March 1928.

Class 51 (Locobase 12903)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 28, p.203. Works number was 27360 in January 1906.

Two earlier Eight-wheelers supplied by Baldwin to the DM, IF & N (Locobase 12625) had the 6-ft-plus drivers of passenger engines. This later stablemate repeated the 1902 design's particulars, but rolled on smaller drivers suitable for mixed-traffic local work. Like the 101-102, the 51 took on the herald from the Saint Paul & Des Moines.

Once the SP & DM was incorporated into the Saint Paul & Kansas City Short Line, the =51 was renumbered 597. As such, it operated into the 1920s before being scrapped in May 1925.
