Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 99 (Locobase 12370)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 22, p. 177. Works number was 17157 in October 1899..

Small, modestly powered, wood-burning Ten-wheeler working for a modestly financed railroad that delayed its first effort at construction until 1898. The line ran 59 miles (95 km) from Durham to Dunn, North Carolina by 1903.

In 1906, the CF&N was reorganized as the Durham & Southern Railway. The 99 may have been too small as it was sold in 1906 to locomotive rebuilder/reseller Georgia Car & Locomotive. GC&L found a buyer in 1908 when the Greenville & Knoxville bought the engine and gave it road #10. About six years later the G&K reorganized as the Greenvillle & Western and sold the 10 to the Atlanta & St Andrews Bay. That road later renumbered the 10 as 121 and sold it to GC&L. GC&L found yet another buyer in the Georgia, Southwestern & Gulf on 30 November 1917.
