Data from Clinch 1943ca Locomotive Diagrams book supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange and from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 28, p. 114. Works number was 27048 in December 1905.
The original spec for the boiler included 2,139 sq ft of heating surface. Locobase suspects that the Clinchfield's later figure of 2,164 sq included 25 sq ft of arch tubes. If so, then the firebox heating surface would have increased to 169 sq ft.
This single Ten-wheeler went into service with the Clinch's predecessor -- the generically named South & Western Railroad as #1. (The S & W had started business as the Ohio River & Charleston.)
The Clinchfield took over the S & W and its three locomotives in 1908. #1's drivers indicate a line with steep grades and low passenger demand. It was produced to a 19th-century layout that included slide valves and Stephenson gear.
Unlike the slightly later, but updated, G-2s (Locobase 9153), this engine operated into the 1950s. 99 was sold to the Black Mountain Railroad in June 1953 as #3. The Black Mountain sold it to the Yancey Railroad in Burnsville, NC in 1956. Ultimately the 1/99/3 went on display at the Casey Jones Museum.

Baldwin works numbers 33060-33063 in December 1908.
The Clinchfield's focus on coal traffic meant that its passenger engines were modest in size and number. This quartet of Ten-wheelers were produced by the builder of the road's lone G-1 (Locobase 9152), but had 12" piston valves and Walschaert radial valve gear. Like the G-1, these were never superheated. For some reason, 103 was scrapped in February 1932 while the other three were dismantled in 1938.
