Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 8 (Locobase 11532)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 15, p. 3. Works number was 9791 in February 1889. Railroad information from [link] . NB: Locobase estimates the firebox heating surface area based on a similar firebox in the Internacional Mexicano 4-6-0 described in Locobase 11632.

The DM&KC was renamed from the Des Moines, Osceola & Southern, which was sold in foreclosure in 1887. After several more years of narrow-gauge operation, the DM&KC was converted to standard gauge in November 1896; by then it had extended south from Des Moines 112 miles to Cainsville, Missouri.

At the time of the conversion, this Ten-wheeler was surplus and was sold to the Keokuk & Western in December 1895. The K&W was converted to standard gauge a little more than a year later, at which point the ex-8 presumably found another career.
