Georgia Coast & Piedmont 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 66 (Locobase 12871)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 47, p. 260. Works numbers were 39655-39656 in April 1913

Locobase 12870 shows the first five in a group of small Ten-wheelers that operated on this eastern Georgia shortline. Seven years after that quintet had been ordered, the GC & P returned for two more that had the same cylinder volume and driver diameter. But the boiler pressure increased by 20 psi, coal fuel was substituted for wood, and the valves were now actuated by the increasingly popular Walschaert outside radial gear.

When the GC & P began selling off its assets as part of its closure in 1918-1919, these two joined four of the earlier locomotives at the locomotive rebuilder/reseller Georgia Car & Locomotive. Both were sold to lumber companies. 66 went to J Ray Arnold Lumber Coas their 100 in March 1920, then Putnam Lumber. 67 joined 63 at Lyon Lumber in Garyville, La in December 1919, where it took #9 and joined the #10 (ex-71 described on Locobase 12872)..

Class 70 (Locobase 12872)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 53, p. 369+. Works numbers were 41463-41464 in June 1914.

Typical Ten-wheel short line freighters that represented a slightly larger version of the 1913 Baldwins described on Locobase 12871.

When the GC&P was sold to Collins and Ludowici in October 1919, the two Ten-wheelers went to locomotive rebuilder/reseller Georgia Car & Locomotive. GC&L quickly found buyers for each. 70 went to the Marianna & Blountstown and 71 began operating on Lyons Lumber tracks as the Garyville, La company's #10 in company with the #9 (ex-GC&P 67).
