Midland Valley / Missouri, Oklahoma & Gulf 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 13230)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 31, p. 103 and Volume 32, p. 1. Works numbers were 32284 in November 1907, 32345-32346 in December, 33043 in November 1908, and 33387-33388 in April 1909. A summary of the Muskogee Company empire appears in the Muskogee Company records, DeGolyer Library, Southern Methodist University, [link], last accessed 26 April 2015.

The MO&G was chartered in 1904 and built 102 mainline miles of 70-lb/yard (35-kg/metre) railway from Wagoner to Red River and another 114 miles in branches and spurs. The affiliated MO&G Railway of Texas built a continuation from Red River to Denison, Tex beginning in 1910. See Locobase 17 for a Handbook of Texas description of the KOG. ([link] -- the Handbook of Texas Online).

Locobase wonders at the persistence of this prairie railroad's preference for such a small grate on this design. Granted, the cylinder volume was easily served by the relatively large boiler and firebox heating surface area wasn't less than average. And its power certainly was up to the task.

Whatever its limitations, the light Ten-wheeler sextet served the MO&G and its February 1920 successor Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf for years. 101 later was sold to Finkbine Lumber and renumbered

Class 20 (Locobase 12859)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 28, p. 163. Works numbers were 26408-26409, 26469, 26477 in September 1909; 29525 in November.

The MV changed the engine numbers to 50-54 to make room for more 2-8-0 Consolidations.

Each of these small freight Ten-wheelers cost $11,485. An earlier engine intended for the Midland Valley and offering identical firebox dimensions was diverted to the Chattahoochee Valley (Locobase 13174). Its specification had the inked in adhesion and engine weights missing from the Volume 28 specs.
