Laurel & Tullahoma Western 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 63 (Locobase 13474)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 32, p. 251. See Locobase 12731 for short history of the Eastman Gardiner company. Works number was 32855 in July 1908.

Clearly the scale of operations on the L & TW called for bigger iron horses, so 4 years after it procured the little 2-4-0 #61 from Baldwin (Locobase 12731), the road ordered a much more substantial engine. This was a mid-sized Ten-wheeler of the type operating on Class 1 roads and it was met with a road that matched those aspirations. Maximum grade was 1 3/4% and the sharpest main-line curves came to a shallow 8 degrees of radius.
