Savannah & Southern 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 105 (Locobase 14681)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 62, pp. 97. See also Georgia Rails's description of the S&S at [link] . Works number was 51974 in June 1919.

Because the S&S used 30 lb/yard (15 kg/metre) rails, its locomotives had to run small and light. The railway was intended to connect Savannah to the Altamaha river about 50 miles (80 km) away. Its actual northeastern end was at Norden (between Pembroke and Ellabell), from which it headed southwest to Glenville, 32 miles (51.5 km) away.

The 105 was the fifth locomotive and the only one bought new. The S&S folded in 1923, whereupon the 105 traveled across Glennville to the Collins & Glennville (formerly the Collins & Ludowici), which had its southeastern terminus in that town and ran 23 miles to the northwest.

Sold to locomotive recycler Luria Brothers and then to recycler/reseller Georgia Car & Locomotive, the 105 found its final home in February 1942 on the Hampton & Branchville in Miley, South Carolina.
