Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 53, pp. 371+. Works number was 45714 in June 1917.
A narrow-gauge, mixed-train Ten-wheeler, the 16 unusually operated its slide valves with Southern valve gear. It was one of the smallest locomotives to use the mechanism. Track conditions included a roadbed with oak ties spaced 18 for every 30 feet (about 21"/53.3 cm apart) and bearing rail weighing anywhere from 25-40 lb/yard (12.5-20 kg/metre). As usual with logging engines, the specs included several different references to stronger components, including the requirement that the spring plates be cast 1/16" (1.6 mm) thicker "than standard for this type of locomotive.".
After the SS&S closed its southeastern Virginia business in 1930, locomotive rebuilder/reseller Southern Iron & Equipment bought the 16 and soon sold it to International Agricultural Company.
