Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 3 (Locobase 11503)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 26, p. 238. Works number was 23848 in February 1904.

The Tallulah Falls straddled the border between Georgia and North Carolina, connecting Cornelia, Georgia on the Southern Railway with Franklin 58 miles (93.4 km) due north in western North Carolina. Cary Franklin Poole, in his History of Railroading in Western North Carolina, observes: "Few railroads embodied the soul of mountain railroading as did the Tallulah Falls Railway. The railroad ...was seldom out of debt but was much beloved by the country folk it served." (p. 47).

Despite its occasional nickname of "Total Failure", the TF was in fact a long-lived railroad in terrain so rugged and remote that it maintained a passenger schedule until 1946. Its last freight run came in 1961.
