Western Railway of Alabama 4-8-2 "Mountain" Locomotives in the USA

The Western Railway of Alabama purchased two 4-8-2s from the American Locomotive Company in 1920 to pull its passenger trains. The "Mountains" were given road numbers 180 and 181 and they had 27 x 28 cylinders, 69" drivers, a boiler pressure of 210 psi, a tractive effort 52,920 and each weighed 316,000 pounds.

Number 181 was scrapped in 1952 and 180 in 1954.

Class M (Locobase 3104)

Data from A&WP - WRA 10 - 1945 Locomotive and Crane Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange.

Unlike most of the other classes on the West Point Route, these Mountains went to only one of the two constituents; the Atlanta & West Point did not buy 4-8-2s. They were relatively light and small, but did the job. In World War II, they were sent to the Georgia Railroad (which connected Augusta with Atlanta and was a part of the WPR as well).

These two lasted in Western service until 1952 and 1954.
