Data from "Some Past and Present Russian Locos", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XXI [21] (15 November 1915), p. 245 and Volume XXII [22] (15 March 1916), p. 55. Works numbers were 1886-1890.
The LM account provides information supplied by G F Tyas to LM's author about 19th Century Russian locomotives. LM gives us nothing more about the Kitson engines other than the works numbers, a table of selected data, and a photograph. The author was able to show the reader five different designs from the Leeds-based builder, beginning with this quintet.
The picture shows a typical English Six-wheeler of the time from the broad smokebox casing to the high running board and slotted splasher over the lead drivers to a straight boiler with thimble-shaped steam dome. Two concessions to Russian operation were the large, enclosed cab and the tall stack with spark-arresting topper.
Locobase has no information concerning the railway, whose name may transliterate in various ways.
