Central Puerto Real

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Puerto Real (Locobase 13494)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volumes 32. p. 306. Works number was 32991 in October 1908.

Ernst Wiener, a locomotive broker who supplied such engines to customers all around the Caribbean, delivered this engine to the island of Vieques, which lies off the southeastern Puerto Rican coast. Central Puerto Real occupied part of Vieques's southern coast between Central Playa Grande to the west and Puerto Ferro to the east.

Its troubled history included a long strike in 1915 that prompted Gustavo Mouraille, its owner, to sell the Central to a group (the successors of Enrique Bird Arias). The new owners had obviously leveraged the financing and could not make payments; they lost control to LWGP Armstrong in a 1921 lawsuit over an unpaid mortgage of US$1.73 million.
