Data from [] (accessed 7 April 2005), in particular an article by James I. C. Boyd. See also R M Livesey, "Rolling-Stock on the Principal Irish Narrow-Gauge Railways", Engineering, Volume 94, (2 August 1912), pp. 169-176, table on p. 175; and Allan C Baker, "Black, Hawthorn & Co--Gateshead-on-Tyne, Works List", Industrial Railway Society (Richmon, Surrey, England: IRS, 1988) supplied in August 2021 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange collection. Works numbers were 554-555 in 1879.
The first engines for this little narrow-gauge were these three saddle tanks, which served until 1909 (# 3, the lighter engine) and 1924. The first two were designed to a spec that included negotiating a 500-ft radius curve, but they proved a bit too long. Even so, they worked on the railway for years. 1 -- Dalraida -- had its boiler and firebox replaced twice while 2 -- Countess of Antrim -- did not.
The third locomotive (works number 513 in 1879 -- named the Lady Boyd) was delivered to the railroad contractors Butler & Fry, who in turn first offered it for sale. The Ballycastle leased the locomotive for a guinea a day in May 1881 and eventually bought it. When rebuilt in 1895, it still was a bit smaller than the 1&2, mounting 12" (305 mm) cylinders and smaller tanks; total weight was 22 long tons (49,280 lb).
