Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 11 (Locobase 11221)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

Delivered in 1916 as part of the Serie 7 line of Moguls, this pair received new, longer boilers and larger Belpaire fireboxes pressed to a greater degree.

Class 12 (Locobase 11222)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

The first 18 of this Mogul design were supplied in 1909-1910 as cross-compounds.

All were superheated beginning in the late 1920s. 8 retained their Stephenson gear and were not redesignated; they are shown in Locobase 11218. The other 10 in the original batch -- 710-715, 706-709 -- were refitted with Gooch valve gear in favor of their originally installed Stephenson link motion. In addition, the locomotives were given smaller drivers to produce more tractive effort. The combination of upgrades prompted a Series change from 7 to 12.

All remained in service well into the 1960s.

Class 12A (Locobase 11223)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

As noted in Locobase 11219, 16 of the 22 Serie 7s of 1910-1912 were superheated in the 1930s but were otherwise unchanged. The other 6 -- 727, 724, 731 in 1932; 722, 732 in 1933; and 735 in 1936 -- were given much smaller drivers and designated for freight duties. These were redesignated Serie 12A.

Class 12B (Locobase 11224)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

At the tail end of the deliveries of the large number of cross-compound Serie 2 Moguls from North British Locomotive Company and Beyer, Peacock (Locobase 11217), the latter supplied these two. Like all of the 2-6-0s delivered during this time, these had Belpaire fireboxes.

Locobase does not know if the simple-expansion cylinder drive train came with the engines in 1910, but suspects as much based on other FCCA procurements.

In 1933, these were upgraded with superheaters like their more numerous predecessors, but apparently the use of Walschaert radial valve prompted a change in designation to Serie 12B.

Class 7cs (Locobase 11218)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

The first 18 of this Mogul design were supplied in 1909-1910 as cross-compounds. In 1929-1932, 8 were superheated, but retained their Stephenson link motion; those are shown here. They remained in service well into the 1960s.

The rest were superheated, given smaller drivers, and fitted with Gooch valve gear as Serie 12; see Locobase 11222.

Class 7s (Locobase 11219)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010. Works numbers in 1910 were 5309-5318.

Following closely on the heels of the 18 cross-compound engines supplied in the previous year (Locobase 11218) and presenting the same basic lines (including the Belpaire firebox), these were delivered with simple-expansion cylinders and radial valve gear. They were modified with superheaters in the late 1920s. All retained their 68" drivers and most their 20" cylinders; a few -- 719, 736-738 -- were fitted with sleeves ("camisas") to reduce cylinder diameter to 19" cylinders.

Class 7sa (Locobase 11220)

Data provided by diagram supplied at the [] site, last accessed 17 April 2010.

This batch of ten Belpaire-boilered Moguls continued the line of 2-6-0s that began with those described in Locobase 11218 when they were delivered in 1914. This set of eight was superheated along very straightforward lines in the late 1920s. They retained their 68" drivers and 20" x 24" cylinders and adopted a superheater essentially identical to the other 2-6-0s modified by the FCCA at the time.

Two others were given larger boilers when they were superheated and redesignated Serie 11; see Locobase 11221.
