These Austrian engines were typical 2-4-0 passenger locomotives of the time. The design put the large steam dome just behind the stack and just ahead of a smaller sand dome that supplied sand to the first axle. The safety valves were located on the firebox under the cab roof.
By the time the state-run Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro de Portugueses (CP) took over the BA in 1948--67 years after they first entered service-- four of the class left the roster. The CP lost little time in disposing of the other four.
