The LN&RC report said that the Baltic could be seen either as an enlargement of the 4-4-2T Atlantic tank or a tank engine derivative of the Type 9 4-6-0. The only signficant difference from the latter was a decrease in cylinder diameter from 445 mm to 420.
NB: Locomotive Magazine reported that the design had 268 small tubes of two-inch outside diameter. It's possible that the Locomotive used the wrong figure or that the Railway World, which offered the 189 tube count, believed that the tube heating surface area represented the tubes' external diameters and "corrected" the tube count. The LN&RC's entry may broken the deadlock as its tube count suggests a simple typographical error in the LM report.)
Using the latter's data revealed that tube heating surface calculation reflected the interior diameters of the tubes and flues. Together with the firebox area, the result came to 139.62 sq m (1,503 sq ft). Calculating the tube heating surface from the outside diameters given in the data fiche yields the figure shown above.
