2-8-0 Steam Locomotives in China

Canton-Hankow

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 13443)

Data from "Recent Baldwin Locomotives for Export", Railway Gazette, Volume 61, No. 11 (15 September 1916), p. 465-466. See also DeGolyer, Volume 60, pp. 100 and 204. (Thanks to Baiyu Shang for his 25 November 2018 email supplying some key information on this class; see below.) Works numbers were 43671-43674 in July 1916.

The Canton-Hankow took delivery of ten locomotives, all with Belpaire fireboxes; the four Ten-wheelers appear in Locobase 13444 and the two 0-6-0 tanks in Locobase 13445. The 2-8-0s' grates rode above the driving axles to ensure there would be enough grate area for the relatively low-calorie coal to generate the steam the cylinders would need. Both main-line quartets had 11" (279 mm) piston valves.
