Ziel and Eagleson (1973) show this to have been a large switcher. It had long tanks on each side extending from the pilot to the cab.
[] (November 2002), the Nairobi Railway Museum website, tells us that these 4-8-4Ts were converted from 4-8-2Ts using trailing bogies from scrapped Class 50 Garratts. The conversion was a success, said the museum, noting "[The conversion] improved the weight distribution and cured them of their habit of derailing in sidings." The shops also lengthened the side tanks.
The class served the EAR for decades. 1315 went on display at the NRM until 1996, when the railway claimed its boiler to serve a stationary location after which the rest of the class went to the scrapper.
