Data from DeGolyer, Vol 78, pp. 218+. Works numbers were 58688-58690 in September 1925.
Even though the Santa Catharina was still constrained by its light (20 kg/metre//40 lb/yard) rail, it went ahead and ordered three wood-burning Consolidations of considerably greater size and weight than its earlier locomotives (Locobases 15177-15178). Valve gear was repositioned outside to actuate 8" (203 mm) piston valves that served cylinders of double the volume.
The extra power was needed to manage longer trains up a continuous 1.3% grade that ran for 18 km (11.2 miles) in the middle of which was a kilometer (0.62 miles) of 1.5%.
