The island of Madoera (later Madura), known as "Island of Charm", lies just off the eastern coast of Java, its westernmost point due north of the port of Surabaya; its area measures 4.471 sq km (1,726 sq miles). The first 18 km (11 mile) segment of the MdrSM, which opened in 1898, ran from the port of Kamal (directly across the channel from Surabayadue north to Bangkalan at the northern opening of the channel.

A year later in 1899, the MdrSM opened a 20 km (12 miles segment in eastern Madoera and finished the first period of railway construction. by extending the line east from Kamal to Kwanyar in 1913.

These six-coupled tanks made up the first 20 engines of the MdrSM.
