kKStB's Karl Golsdorf had produced dozens of 2-10-0s in the 280 (Locobase 10554) and 380 classes (Locobase 10555) as four-cylinder compounds in 1907 and 1909. When the Sudbahn followed suit in 1912, however, they adopted a two-cylinder simple-expansion design that enlarged most dimensions, weights, and areas.
580s hauled trains in the SB's Brenner district. After the first 27 entered service in 1912-1913, the railway ordered four more in 1917 but had to wait until 1920 for delivery. Meanwhile the 1918 armistice that ended combat in November 1918 provided for reparations and the SB delivered ten of the class to Italy as their Gruppo 482; four of these were the 1917 order (works numbers 4201-4203) that was not delivered. Five more went to the newly formed Jugoslav State Railway (JDZ) as their class 07 (later class 145).
After World War I, the remaining 27 locomotives expanded their operating areas to include the Arlbergbahn and the Semmeringbahn.
Locobase 1519 shows the 40 locomotives that Wikipedia describes as identical to these Ste locomotives, but data differences led Locobase to keep the earlier entry separate. After World War II's years as Deutches Reichsbahn locomotives, the survivors returned to Austrian control Between 1956 and 1959, the OBB loaned thirteen to Greece to join their Lambdas.
Age and electrification led to the class's withdrawal beginning in 1953 with the last ending service in 1964.
