Class BR 50 40 (Locobase 9596)

Data from "Baureihe 50.40 " on Alfred Gieseler's Dampfmaschinen und Lokomotiven at [] , last accessed 1 November 2020.from [], last accessed July 2007. See also

Miska tells us that this little batch of rebuilt BR 50s (see Locobase 1294 for the original) used Franco-Crosti waste gas heaters in new boilers to reduce coal consumption by 15%. Unfortunately, the savings were accompanied by a very rapid onset of corrosion in the preheater flues thanks to sulfuric acid. Although some were rebuilt with new boilers and one, 50 4011, was converted to oil firing with positive results, no other BR 50s were converted.
