Data from A[nthony] E[dward] Durrant, The Steam Locomotives of Eastern Europe (Newton Abbot:David & Charles, 1966); and P[eter] M[ichael] Kalla-Bishop, Hungarian Locomotives (NY: Drake Publishers, 1973). See also Gustav Reder (Michael Reynolds, trans), The world of steam locomotives (New York: Putnam, 1974).
These small Mallets replaced 4-6-0s that were outmanned by the heavier passenger trains working the ruling 2.5% grade between Fiume and Karlstadt. Reder notes that they had a top speed of 60 kph (38 mph) and could pull 130-ton trains up the 2.5% grade at 30 kph (18.5 mph). (Kalla-Bishop cites a performance of 260 tons up the same 35 km (22 mile) stretch at 24 kph (15 mph.).
Durrant describes a design that had a wide firebox and piston valves on all four cylinders (unusual for a Mallet compound). Two (003 & 005) were fitted with Brotan boilers. This class wound up on Yugoslavian railways after the 1918 Armistice.
