2-6-0 Steam Locomotives in Argentina

Entre Rios

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Nogoya (Locobase 15859)

Data from R Herbert La Page, "On Compound Locomotives", Railway Engineer, Volume X, No 3 (March 1889), pp. 67-79. Works number was 2244 in 1886.

Herbert wrote that this engine was one of several Moguls sent out to the Entre Rios and the only one to use the von Borries-Worsdell cross-compound system then coming into vogue. The key feature in the design was the automatic intercepting valve that allowed live steam into the LP cylinder for starting and used the exhaust steam to close that valve once the locomotive began moving.

(The other Moguls used two 16" x 24" simple cylinders; see Locobase 21311.)

Herbert's long article goes into considerable detail about the advantages of compounding and, given its relatively early publication, is a valuable look at the burgeoning stud of two-cylinder compounds in several countries.

Class Pellegrini (Locobase 21311)

Data from R Herbert La Page, "On Compound Locomotives", Railway Engineer, Volume X, No 3 (March 1889), pp. 67-79. Works numbers were 2238-2239, 2242-2243 in 1886.

Herbert focused on the one von Borries-Worsdell cross-compound in Dubs's first tranche of five Moguls sent out to the Entre Rios (described at some length in Locobase 15859).

Locobase often finds that such experiments duplicate the specifications of the simple-expansion class. Acting on the assumption that happened in this case, he duplicated the earlier entry. Note, however, that the boiler pressure and adhesion and engine weights may be too high. The data may also apply to a later set of Moguls delivered by Dubs in 1888 as works numbers 2396-2399 and 2402-2404 and on the roster as road numbers 10-13 and 14-16.
