Class SIGLO XX (Locobase 944)

Note: Locobase used the Locomotive Cyclopdia 1947 data for this locomotive as shown on p.784 when he first drafted this entry in 2000-2001. He adopted the more recent data from the 1958 diagram book because of its origin and the considerably greater amount of detail. He believes the diagram's calculation of superheater area is probably too high.)

This Wilkes-Barre, PA product was a heavy and powerful locomotive with a sizable cylinder volume and lots of firebox heating surface. A high boiler pressure setting meant a hard-working boiler.

Note: Locobase suspects that four other Moguls ordered from Vulcan by the FC Corumba-Santa Cruz in 1941 had the same dimensions, areas, and weights. Their works numbers were 4296-4299 in 1941. Delivered with road numbers 1-4, they soon added 100 to each to renumber them 101-104. Still later the quartet took EFBB road numbers 511-514.

The mines were a major source of tin in Bolivia in the early 20th Century and, hence, the world. See Norman Gall, "Bolivia: The Price of Tin" (June 1974) published on [] (June 14 2004).

The locomotive's name was derived from the Siglo XX mine, which was the scene of near-constant labor strife from the time of Patino's acquisition in the 1910s through the 1960s. The mine was the site of what has been described as the worst massacre of workers in Bolivian history on 24 June 1967.

The 12 was reported surviving at Marchacamarca in 2005 and in a museum in 2008.
