Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 36, p 284. (Thanks to Ivo Rutishauser for his 28 June 2026 email correcting the works number series.) Works numbers were 35925-35930 in January 1911.
These were the "small Mallets" (in comparison to the large Mallets shown in Locobase 12931). When Baldwin's agent in Brazil created this specification, he orginally gave the railway as the Parana Railway. He then crossed that name out and entered Sao Paulo & Rio Grande. When that didn't evenuate, he arranged for the Brazil Railway to buy the sextet for use on the Sorocbana
Each HP cylinder was cast separately and attached to the intermediate saddle under the boiler. Each LP cylinder was cast "in one piece" and bolted together at the center. Operational experience showed that the frames needed "...to be redesigned and reinforced" according to a 5 May 1913 letter. A 2 March 1916 letter from P W Weidenbacher suggests that the solution to the problem had been identified: "Change frame design to take shear off bolts holding the top rail to frame."
Also, any additional engines were to use flanged tires on all wheels.
