Tank engines for yard switching or short moves along the mainline of this tortuous road over the Andes mountains.

Arrayed along the Belpaire boiler, front to back , were the headlight, straight stack with slight bell, cylindrical sand dome, steam dome, bell, second sand dome, flat top to the firebox with safety-valve stand, capacious cab, and rear headlight -- all with a long tank flanking the boiler on each side. The drivers turned inside of the plate frames, which ended ahead of the rear bogie.

By 1900, the FCAB railway covered 574 miles (924 km) of mostly high-altitude terrain in which the heavy trains went "downhill" and the supply trains traveled "uphill". It later extended to La Paz, in Bolivia and its system included 1,821 miles (2,932 km) of which 721 miles of trunk line connected La Paz to the Pacific at Antofagasta.

The FCAB renumbered the class as 12-20 in 1908 and transferred the 16-20 to the Aguas Blancas in 1912.
