These little Mogul tanks operated in such an arid environment in northern Chile that they trailed eight-wheel tenders; their side tanks held 800 gallons. They were rated to negotiate curves of 300 ft radii. The engines displayed a set of driving axles with different spreads, the front two being 6 ft (1.524 m) apart while the second and third lay 9 ft (2.743 m) apart to allow a deep firebox to ride between them.

The shops reduced the cylinder diameter in most of the class to 15", possibly at the same time as they removed the saddle tank.
