Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 291 (Locobase 12718)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 27, p. 125. Works number was 25022 in January 1905.

Class Tipo 50 (Locobase 10756)

Data from Charles King, "The Chilian [sic] State Railways," The Railway Magazine (March 1908), pp. 209-214; see also the introductory article in the same journal at February 1908, pp.143-150; and Chilean State Railways (EFE) diagram book, 50, supplied in August 2025 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange collection. See also See also Martin Coombs, Chilean steam locomotive lists, Part 1, Broad gauge locos (v2.64, March 2026), p. 103- at []. First date was an estimate until Pablo Moraga emailed Locobase on 27 April 2022 revealing the road numbers and the correct date. Muchas gracias.) Works numbers were 5665-5666 in 1905.

The CSR expended a good deal of effort on reducing the spare-part count by ensuring that different classes used many of the same components. For example, this broad-gauge shunting tank used the same pony trucks, cylinders, motion, drivers, and axle-boxes as did the metre-gauge 2-6-2T shown in Locobase 10755. The duo's ambit was the CSR yards in Santiago and Valparaiso.

Class Tipo 55 (Locobase 11417)

Data from "Locomotive Building," The Railroad Gazette, Volume XLII [42], No 22 (31 May 1907), p 758. See also Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 30, p. 272; and Martin Coombs, Chilean steam locomotive lists, Part 1, Broad gauge locos (v2.64, March 2026), p. at [] (Thanks to Pablo Moraga for his 30 January 2016 email correcting Locobase's mistake in wheel arrangement identification.), Works numbers were 31735-31736, 31737-31744, 31804-31806, 31818-31821 in September 1907 and 31845, 31895, 32019 in October 1907.

Broker Wessel Cuval Cia ordered this batch of Moguls in 1907 and Baldwin delivered all 20 by the end of the year. Clearly, the class satisfied requirements as all 20 (21 counting 492, which was built by the shops out of spare parts) remained on the roster through 1955. (Coombs notes that the 492 could have originally come from its first owner contractor Allard Dolfus Sillard et Wiriot).

Class Type 45 (Locobase 11939)

Data from "New Locomotive Equipment," The Railway Age, Volume (24 August 1900), p 157 and "Locomotive Building", Railroad Gazette, Volume XXXII [32], No 34 (24 August 1900), p. 572. See also See also Martin Coombs, Chilean steam locomotive lists, Part 1, Broad gauge locos (v2.64, March 2026), p. 94 at [] numbers were 5653-5654 in November 1900.

W R Grace ordered these two Moguls for the FC del Estado de Chile's broad-gauge lines. Coombs reported the purchase price as 3,160 pounds sterling. Braden Copper Company bought the pair in 1929 for scrap.
