4-4-0 Steam Locomotives in Chile

Santiago & Valparaiso

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Adelante/Tipo 3 (Locobase 21330)

Data from Chilean State Railways (EFE) diagram book, 53, supplied in August 2025 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange collection. See also Martin Coombs, Chilean steam locomotive lists, Part 1, Broad gauge locos (v2.64, March 2026), p. at [].

Delivered as 0-4-2s like those shown in Locobase 9311 and 9313, both locomotives eventually received another driven axle. The Adelante came out of the shops as Tipo 3, a conventionally arranged American-style Eight-wheeler in which the lead bogie preceded the two driving axles.

As late as 1920, the aging #4 apparently was requisitioned by the Direccion de Obras Publicas (DOP). The EFE withdrew #5, Recompensa, some time before 1914.
