Data from website celebrating these two pioneers in locomotive construction in Alsace - [], last accessed 13 June 2010.
Following up on its success with the Alsatian Ville de Thann, this small firm supplied two locomotives -- Strasbourg and Bittschwiller -- for the 134-km line between Basle and Strasbourg. Note the relatively tall drivers.
The B a S modified both engines to the 2-4-0 layout used by the Ville de Thann. Its drivers now measured 1,510 mm, cylinders grew to 360 x 520 mm, boiler pressure to 6.5 atm.
Strasbourg was renamed Hercules, which now had 70 sq m of heating surface area. Once modified to the Polonceau system, Hercule was rated at 300 tons (45 wagons) in trains measuring up to 240 m long.
