Borsig works numbers were 2685-2688, 2697-2700, 2715-2718 in 1871; 2861, 2863-2872 in 1872. Hartmann works numbers were 680-697 in 1873.
The Fliegers (Flyers) of the Cologne and Minden had generously proportioned dimensions for its wheel arrangement in Germany at the time - quite a bit bigger than any of the other classes of which Locobase is aware. Appearance presented a utilitarian look with a long thin boiler backed by a tall, flat-faced rounded firebox topped by a small dome. On the other hand, the 40-mm outside diameter for the fire tubes is quite small.
They were long-striding engines with deep grates and long boiler tubes, which forced the single leading axle well forward. The dome was directly over the firebox. A straight belt line carried high fully exposed the main rod and axle crank; the forward splasher was almost fully open.
In service they pulled 7-10 passenger coaches on the Berlin-Cologne express. A modified version with a shorter wheelbase and angled grate was used as the Prussian State's standard locomotive design; see P3, S1 entries.
At a later time, the C-M was taken into the Essen section of the Prussian State Railways, at which point the locomotives were renumbered 55-92.
