Data from "The Locomotives of the Great Eastern Railway", The Locomotive, Volume 16 (15 December 1910), p. 261. Road numbers 20 in May 1877, 21-22, 23-25 in June, 7 and 9 in December, 8 in February 1878, 10 in April, and 22 in May.
These were the only engines built at the GER's Stratford Works during William Adams' superintendence. They had a bit more heating surface area than the 50 0-4-4Ts shown in Locobase 16021. The frst five had two plates butt-joined; they were recognized by their dome on the front course. The latter five used a three-plate boiler that put the dome over the center plate. The LM author notes the economical recycling that led to reusing old Gooch-era drivers, suitably cut down, for the leading drivers ahead of the trailing drivers, which had been the leading drivers of Sinclair-designed four-coupled. Bromley's tank engines provided drivers for the second five.
They pulled light local passenger trains on the GER's branch lines.
