First 2-couple freight locomotive design by Stephenson. First one was delivered to the Leicester & Swannington in December 1833, the second to the Stanhope & Tyne immediately thereafter. The carrying axle permitted a larger boiler. The engine's success led to its widespread adoption until about 1846. A later example, with a taller firebox, went into Liverpool & Manchester service as the LION.
