In 1926, the BRL began taking delivery its first tender road engines (works numbers 1482-1486) . Over the next three years, Nasmyth Wilson would sandwich ten F-class 2-8-2s around Nasmyth Wilson's quintet of Hudson locomotives that were designed by Westminster's consulting engineering firm of Sir John Wolfe Barry and Partners
Compared to the earlier A (0-8-4T) and B (4-8-4T) engines, all seven were much more like miniature standard-gaugers. Maximum allowable axle loading and wheelbase constraints still limited weight and size, but rail weights and permanent way upgrades allowed an increase to 7 long tons per axle. The aspect ratio of driver diameter to rail gauge was 1.40, equivalent to a 79" driver on the standard gauge. Each square foot of grate area served 28% fewer square feet of evaporative heating surface area.
