Wikipedia states that this class would be the only main-line steam locomotive design ordered for Indonesia after the 1949 declaration of independence from the Netherlands.
General-purpose or mixed-traffic locomotives with a tonnage rating of 600 tons at 90 kph (56 mph) on the level or 40 kph (25 mph) up a 1% grade. The builder apparently refreshed the Deutsches Reichsbahn BR 41 2-8-2 (Locobase 4316). It resembled the German engine in its use of Witte-type ("elephant ear") smoke deflectors flanking the smokebox and the general lines of the BR 41's boiler. But it ran on a 3/4 size gauge
Designed for either coal or oil firing, the D52's late-steam modernism meant it served all kinds of requirements. Of the 100 delivered, the first half (D52 001-D52050) burned coal, the remainder-52 051-52 100] used "residual oil". Madiun Workshop converted almost half (21) of the coal burners to residual oil between 1956 and 1965.
Translated into English, the account notes:
"In Java, the D52 locomotive was primarily utilized for passenger transport rather than freight. Some members of the public even held the locomotive in high regard for its reliability in transporting passengers wherever they needed to go-such as on the Madiun-Kertosono line, where it hauled the *Rapih Dhoho* train. Conversely, in South Sumatra, the locomotive was used for freight transport, specifically for hauling coal trains."
Yet the very size of the D52's drivers and its low factor of adhesion caused problems. While the class proved "highly suitable" on lowland freight and passenger trains, "it performed poorly on mountainous routes (particularly in West Java) due to its tendency to run at high speeds." Another issue illustrated the consequences of mishandling such a high pressure boiler: D52 084's boiler burst during a freight run.
The last of the class was withdrawn in the 1970s. Although one ran excursion trips in the 1990s, only the 52099 remains on display.
