Data from [] (accessed 23 December 2006); and D Rock Carling, 4-8-0 Tender Locomotives (New York: Drake Publishing, 1972), p.66. See also the Nairobi museum website [] (first accessed November 2002). See also "New Engines for the Tanganyika Ry", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XXIX [29], No 371 (14 July 1923), p.189. Works numbers were 6126-6133 in 1923.
These engines were purchased by Tanganyika Railways as part of a post-World War I reequipment effort. Carling wrote that the sextet were derived from a Uganda Railway design (e.g. Locobase 4317's GD), but BP fitted a larger superheater and longer Belpaire firebox. Originally designed to burn wood (which hadn't enough calories) and later fired with coal (which produced clinker), the class was converted to oil-firing and proved successful.
When the KUR was taken in by the East African Railways, the class was renumbered 2301-2306.
