Data from "Shire Highlands Railway (Nyasaland) 4-8-0 Locomotive", Locomotive Magazine, Volume 18 (15 August 1912), pp. 168-169.
Very small drivers indicate just what a severe profile this, particularly as the railway began its 1 in 44 (2.3%) climb from 12 miles beyond Chiromo. For the next 52 miles, the alignment featured one curve after another. Twelve-wheeler had to negotiate. Its Belpaire firebox's cross-section flared out above the inside plate frames.
See Locobase 15935 for a later batch of identical locomotives produced by Hawthorn Leslie for the Trans-Zambesi.
