Data from ICC Locomotive Diagrams supplied in August 2016 by Allen Stanley from his extensive RailData Exchange Works numbers were 3164-3165, 3167, 3170 in December 1882 and 3166, 3168-3169 in January 1883.
These saddle tanks were bought for the French company that made the first serious effort to dig a canal linking the Caribbean with the Pacific. Name changes applied to the first four locomotives suggest the turbulence troubling the money-losing, fever-ridden effort. At first, the engines honored the engineers and financiers that directed the project: Ferdinand de Lesseps, V Dauzats (chief engineer of the Suez Canal), A Richier, and G Saleta. But before their delivery, France's honor took over and they were named for French rivers: Meuse, Gironde, Moselles, and Garonne. Locomotives supplied a month later were the Seine, Loire, and Rhone.
