Like the Serie 001 quartet, this little locomotive served as a station and depot shunter. Unlike the earlier engines, its vertical boiler--adopted for "quick steaming" stood up in a dummy-like cabin with the stack centered in the cylindrical vessel. The designer scaled the components of its Walschaert outside constant-lead radial valve gear to match its tiny specifications. cylinder/stroke ratio approached a square 1:1.
Known as Maria Alice to its crews, the 5 remained on the roster until 1955. It later joined the motive power collection at the Museu Nacional Ferroviário (see []) in Entroncamento.
