The writers say that this design was intended to tackle freights over a line that had 1 1/2% ruling grades and sharp curves. They were rated at 246 tonnes up a 1% grade at 25 versts/hour (27 km/h). Scaling a 0.8%grade at 15 versts/hour, one of these engines could manage a 368-tonne drag.
