Class Columbia (Locobase 368)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 18, p. 176. See also James Dredge, Built by Baldwin as an experiment. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 13 December 2020 noting Baldwin's overall wheelbase and tender coal capacity. Works number was 13350 in April 1893.

Named in honor of the 1893 Columbian Exposition at Chicago, this was intended to be the prototype of a new type of express passenger engine. The 2-4-2 or "Columbia" wheel arrangement met with little success in the US because of its uneasy riding qualities. Most passenger locomotives of the time were 4-4-0-s, 4-6-0s or 4-4-2s.

In 1898, the Columbia was donated to Columbia University, where it was set up in the vault between Havemeyer Hall and the Engineering Building.
