The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad began steam operation in 1837 between Toledo, OH and Adrian, MI. Their first locomotive was named Adrian, number 80 from the Matthias Baldwin Company, completed in June 1837. According to Baldwin records, they had two additional Baldwin 4-2-0s. However, those records indicate that the third was delivered to a successor road.
The E&K was the first railroad IN Ohio, as opposed to "first Ohio Railroad." It was chartered as a Michigan territory railroad, but its southern terminus, soon to be Toledo, became Ohio after the Ohio-Michigan war. They began operation in 1836 as a horse railroad and received the Adrian in 1837.
