Data from CI&L 1 - 1940 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 1058 in December 1884 and 1065-1067 in May 1885.
The LNA&C Railway emerged in 1873 by acquiring the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Rail Road (originally the New Albany and Salem Rail Road established in July 1847). Eight years (and a major panic in 1873) later, the reorganized company consolidated with the Chicago and Indianapolis Air Line Railway Company in August 1881.
Four years later, the railway bought this set of Moguls built in Dunkirk, NY.
Its final form took shape in March 1897 when it reformed as the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville, which was known as the Monon for the junction near Indianapolis. Total rail mileage at that point came to 509 miles (819 km).
