Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 111/D-7 (Locobase 2158)

Data from Catalogue Descriptive of Simple and Compound Locomotives built by Brooks Locomotive Works, Dunkirk, NY (Buffalo, NY: Matthew-Northrup Company, 1899); see also Charles McShane, The Locomotive Up to Date (Chicago: Griffin & Winters, 1899), pp. 482-483. See also CI&L 1 - 1941 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange; and "Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Eight-Wheeler", Locomotive Engineering, Volume 10, No 8 (August 1897), pp. 619-620, 621 (diagram). (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 21 June 2017 email noting the proper sequence of road numbers, the correct cylinder diameter and stroke for the pair as delivered as well as the tender's fuel capacity.) Works numbers were 2627-2628 in June 1897. (Builder info from B.Rumary, 25 Kingscombe, Gurney Slade, Radstock, BA3 4TH, ENGLAND and Jeremy Lambert as supplied by Allen Stanley in March 2004. )

The cab sported a clerestory. The general appearance justifies the adjectival "very handsome" awarded in the LE report in its combination of a high running board, lead truck and moderately sloped pilot running ahead of the smokebox, and the clean boiler with bands subdividing its length and making it appear slimmer than it was.

A curious contradiction of cylinder volume appears when the researcher compares the August 1897 report in the LE with the 1899 Brooks Catalogue. Chris Hohl notes that the LE reports the cylinder diameter as 18" and stroke as 26". But the almost contemporaneous catalogue shows the 18 1/2 x 24" dimensions shown in Locobase's specs. Locobase chose to use the Brooks figure as it is repeated in later Monon diagrams.

Very shortly after the LNA&C ordered these locomotives, the railroad was reorganized as the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (the Monon Route). Brooks's 1899 Catalogue shows the pair refitted with 19 1/2" x 24" cylinders.

The pair was renumbered 80-81, 80 was rebuilt with a saturated boiler in December 1923 and 81 was superheated; for the latter, see Locobase 8295.

Class D-4 (Locobase 8293)

Data from CI&L 8 - 1941 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 17, p. 255 and Volume 18, p. 219. Works numbers were 12612 in April 1892, 13506 in June 1893

The design is typical for the early 1890s in its narrow firebox and steam dome over the crown sheet. The LNA&C was absorbed by the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon) in 1897.

Although small, the two engines ran on the Monon until the middle 1930s.

Class D-5 (Locobase 8296)

Data from CI&L 8 - 1941 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 4457-4458, 4474-4475 in February 1891

Rogers followed the 1889-1890 batch of 18" cylinder mixed-traffic, American-type Eight-wheelers (Locobase 8297) with this quartet of larger, heavier passenger 4-4-0s.

897's reorganization resulted in new name: Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (aka Monon). Renumbered in 1911.

71 was dropped from the roster before 1914. 73 went to the scrapper in February 1916, 72 following in November 1920, 70 in August 1923.

Class D-7-A - superheated (Locobase 8295)

Data from CI&L 8 - 1941 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange.

Locobase 3143 describes the saturated-boiler version of this pair of locomotives.

When the 81 was superheated in April 1924, the high-pitched boiler sacrificed 136 tubes in favor of 22 flues for a modest amount of superheat. Cylinder volume changed as the diameter grew by 1/2".
