South Porto Rico Sugar Company(SPRSC) operated the trio of Ten-wheelers on a meter-gauge railway on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico, bringing sugar cane to the second largest sugar mill on the island. They were among the first locomotives to serve what would become the largest sugar producer in the years before World War I.
To guard against setting fire to the surrounding vegetation, the specification required an extended smokebox with a spark hopper and netting to catch cinders. The engine's rocking grate was to be "suitable for burning anthracite coal [another means of reducing cinders] or coke separately."
