Athearn Genesis Mikado plus NWSL Axle Gear Replacement
The wheelset is removed and a small scratch is made on the axle and wheel to assist in quartering during reassembly.
An NWSL "Puller" is used to remove the wheel from the axle.
The wheel closest to the ridged end of the hubs is removed.
One wheel has been removed from the axle. The brass bushing can now be removed.
The new axle gear is pressed onto the hub.
Note that the shoulder of the axle gear goes to the inside of the wheelset.
The gear is pressed on a very small amount at a time the axle is rotated after each small press.
A channel lock plyers is used to carefully press the wheel back onto the axle.
This method was used because the crank pin interfered with the NSWL press.
After pressing the wheelset back together a flange gauge is used to verify the correct flange width.
The entire wheelset is lubricated and reassembled. The builder's tag says that this has been manufactured exclusively for Athearn by Samhongsa.
The piston crank and excentric are reattached.
Notice the brake rigging has been reattached.
Marker lamps and grab irons have been attached.
