In his discussion of then-modern locomotives, Robinson reported that this engine would draw 694 long tons on the level at 25 mph. Hauling an average load of 490 tons, the engine burned 59 1/4 lb of coal per mile. "A peculiar feature of this engine was the position of the hind axle under the firebox, permitted by the shallowness of the end of the latter [because the grate sloped down from back to front]," said Robinson. There were two purposes to this stubby arrangement. It allowed "... a comparatively short wheel base and an equable distribution of the weight of the engine."
